Greenhouse gas emissions up in B.C.
Last updated Jun 5 2006 08:39 AM PDT
CBC News

The latest report from Environment Canada shows greenhouse gas emissions in B.C. have increased by nearly 30 per cent since 1990 — the base year in the Kyoto agreement on climate change.

Eighty-three per cent of those emissions come from the oil and gas industry and the use of cars, trucks and outboard motors in the province.

The B.C. emissions numbers are contained in a report issued last month by Environment Canada to the United Nations convention on climate change.

Matt Price of the Conservation Voters of B.C. said the report shows the province is "heading in entirely the wrong direction in terms of our Kyoto commitments."

The Campbell government unveiled its own climate change plan a year and a half ago. It includes measures to encourage clean energy and alternative fuels.

The government also cites the fact that B.C. has the third lowest level of greenhouse gas emissions per capita in Canada.

But Price questions the government's commitment, given its support for major highway and energy projects that will increase emissions.

Price added that the increase in B.C.'s emissions isn't likely to be found on any government news release.

"Not only has Canada at the national level begun to abdicate its Kyoto commitments, but B.C. is also leading the way in breaking our international commitments."

Keep Canada in Kyoto

Take action!

Tell Prime Minister Stephen Harper to keep Canada in Kyoto

The global warming debate is heating up again. This time the debate isn’t about whether or not global warming is happening. It’s about what Canada is doing about the problem. Or, more specifically, what Canada isn’t doing about the problem.

Thirty of 34 countries in Kyoto are on track to meet their targets, but Prime Minister Harper says Canada isn’t even going to try to meet ours. Instead, we’re going to ignore our promise and our international responsibility.

In fact, Canada now has no real plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at all.

Please send an email to Prime Minister Harper urging him to meet Canada’s Kyoto targets and take a lead role in this important issue.

Hey Folks,

I’m just tryin’ to suss out what’s goin’ on in Vancouver on this Hallowe’en weekend as I have no real set plans yet. If there’s somethin’ nifty goin’ on at a club or bar, a good band playin’, a great party to go to, fill me in as I have Friday & Saturday nights off, plus Monday (actual Hallowe’en!) night off, too.

I have my costume all together and I’m itchin’ to wear it! It’s an exact duplicate of Brando’s character of “Johnny” in “The Wild One” outfit, and I don’t want it to go to wate, y’know?

Talk to ya soon!

It was at Edit Breaks at the Cellar in downtown Vancouver and I gotta say, those guys have one SERIOUS monday night going on there, it was totally rammed with cats banging on the ceiling and shit, I wish I had a microphone... Especially for the part at the end where Soda did a rewind on this Rawhill Cru tune!

Twas all in good fun tho. Maybe I'll edit it out when I get back, but I think it's kinda funny.
